GoSun is an innovative company that is known for creating unique products such as solar hot dog cookers, solarized camping trailers, and tiny homes. However, the company promises its latest creation is the most revolutionary one yet.
Folding Rooftop Solar Panel
GoSun’s rooftop solar box provides an off-grid way of charging an electric vehicle, whether on the move or when parked. When the car is parked, the device unravels to multiply the charging power. This provides an in-field range boost without needing a charging station or electrical socket. When the device is folded on the car, it looks like a rooftop cargo box. However, the device’s roof contains 200 watts of solar panels.
GoSun’s solar box provides about as much power as standard solar arrays on an RV when it’s folded. It’s enough to charge a leisure battery when parked but not enough for a large lithium traction battery. However, the real charging power comes when the car is parked.
For example, if a driver is camping in a remote location, they can unfold the box to reveal an array of solar panels. It spans from the front to the back of the car, accessing a total available output of 1,200 watts once the driver closes the box. Then, the driver plugs the 120-V output cable into the charging port for level 1 charging. All of that power is straight from the sun. GoSun says the solar box can withstand winds up to 30 mph when it’s unraveled. However, when it’s boxed up and on the move, it withstands driving speeds up to 100 mph.
Charging on the Go
The GoSun EV Solar Charger Box is no match for an ultra-speed charger, but that’s not its purpose. GoSun estimates a daily range boost of up to 30 miles in the right conditions. On an average day, it’s more like 1o to 20 miles. But still, those miles are added when the car is parked or otherwise off its normal charger, especially if your daily range is around that number.
The design could definitely use some work, as it’s not the most appealing when draped over the car’s windshield and trunk. However, on a sunny day, it does provide some shade for the inside of the car to help keep the interior cool.
Let’s talk numbers. Solar power is free, but the Solar Charger Box does not come in at an estimated $2,999 price tag, according to GoSun. Although it comes at a pretty penny, GOSun says it may be eligible for a 30% US tax credit. The company plans to send buyers the preassembled Solar Charger Box in 2025. GoSun says the system is meant to remain on the car at all times, but it can be easily removed if needed.
